How to Source Quality Aluminum Doors from China: A Guide for Importers & Contractors

Oct 5,2026

Sourcing aluminum doors from China is less about finding a supplier than about qualifying one. The factories that ship clean containers and the ones that generate claims look almost identical on a trading platform. The difference shows in how they answer technical questions, what paperwork they can produce, and whether they will build a sample first.

Quick answer: three questions separate a manufacturer from a reseller. Which profiles and plate thicknesses do you make, and to what tolerance? What do you test on a finished leaf? Can you build a pre-production sample to my drawing? Vague answers to any of the three are the signal.

Start With the Specification, Not the Supplier

Most sourcing problems begin before the first email. An RFQ that reads "300 aluminum entry doors, please quote" attracts a dozen prices that are not comparable, because "aluminum entry door" spans a 4 mm sheet leaf and a 15 mm plate leaf, a single glazed panel and a double-glazed sealed unit, a surface-mounted pull handle and a concealed multipoint lock.

Fix the variables first: opening size and handing, leaf plate thickness, glazing build-up, finish system and colour reference, hardware specification, packing method, loading plan and destination port. When every supplier quotes the same description, price becomes meaningful.

A Factory Evaluation Checklist

Production capability

Ask what happens in-house and what is bought in. Cutting, CNC machining, welding and assembly usually sit with the door maker; extrusion, powder coating and anodizing may be outsourced. You should still know which model you are buying, because it decides who owns the tolerance on the finished leaf, and what maximum single-leaf size the line can hold flat.

Quality system and routine testing

Request the test list a finished leaf goes through, not a quality slogan: dimensional and diagonal check, hardware function and cycle test, gasket compression at head, jambs and sill, glazing seal integrity, and coating film thickness with a cross-hatch adhesion check.

Export record

Ask which markets they already ship to, how they pack a leaf for sea freight, who prepares the commercial documents, and what protection sits between the door face and the container wall.

Certifications and Reports Worth Asking For

No single global certificate covers an entrance door. Match the request to the destination market and ask for the report, not the logo on a business card.

  • Weather performance: air infiltration, watertightness and wind-load deflection to ASTM E283, E331 and E330, or the EN 12207, EN 12208 and EN 12211 family, tested at the project design pressure.
  • Security: forced-entry resistance to EN 1627 (RC2 or RC3) or an equivalent ASTM F476 class, with the test naming the lock and cylinder fitted.
  • Glass: EN 12150 for toughened, EN ISO 12543 for laminated, ASTM C1048 for heat-treated glass, and in US hurricane zones an ASTM E1996 / E1886 impact rating or a Miami-Dade notice of acceptance.
  • Thermal: a U-value to EN ISO 10077-1 or NFRC 100 where an energy code applies.
  • Management system: ISO 9001 as a baseline, backed by a recent third-party inspection report if the order is large.

A test report names the assembly, the tested size and the date; a certificate image names none of them.

MOQ, Tooling and Lead Times

Minimum order quantity is driven by colour and profile, not by a flat factory rule. A standard model in a stocked colour can often ship in small quantities, while a bespoke extrusion die or a custom powder colour carries a per-colour minimum and a real tooling cost. Ask whether that tooling is charged once or amortised, and who owns the die.

Treat lead times as two numbers, prototype and production. A sample typically takes a few weeks; a bulk run is measured in weeks of manufacturing plus ocean transit. Ask for a written schedule with milestones for approval, production, inspection and shipment.

Sampling: The Cheapest Risk Control You Will Buy

A pre-production sample built to your actual drawing is the only way to verify a supplier before volume. On arrival, measure the plate thickness, confirm the glazing build-up and spacer, check gasket compression, operate the lock and hinges through several cycles, inspect the corner joints and coating film, and compare the finish against the agreed colour reference.

Keep it sealed and labelled: it becomes the standard the bulk shipment is inspected against.

Glazing is where specifications drift most: P-067 pairs a solid leaf with a frosted sidelight, and every pane has to be named in the RFQ.

Six Sourcing Pitfalls

  • Price shopping an undefined product. The lowest quote often answers the thinnest question.
  • Quoting from a photograph. A stock image carries no dimensions, handing or glazing data.
  • Skipping the sample. The saving is small; the exposure is the whole order.
  • Accepting "equivalent" hardware or glass. Ask for the model number, the glass build-up and the test standard behind the word.
  • Ignoring packing and loading. Damage in transit is a packing failure, not bad luck.
  • No pre-shipment inspection standard. Agree in writing what is checked, by whom, and what happens if it fails.

What a Good RFQ Contains

  • Opening width, height and wall thickness, with a dimensioned sketch or elevation.
  • Leaf configuration and handing — single, double, unequal double or pivot.
  • Plate thickness and glazing build-up, pane by pane.
  • Finish system and a colour reference, plus whether the inner and outer faces differ.
  • Hardware schedule, including lock type and cylinder standard.
  • Quantity per size and colour, packing requirement, port of discharge and target delivery window.
  • Any test report the project must satisfy, named by standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to buy from a trading company or a factory?

A factory usually wins on custom work, where tolerances and drawings have to be discussed directly. A good trading company can still win on mixed containers and documentation.

How long should sampling take?

Allow a few weeks for a pre-production sample to your drawing; custom extrusions or colours add time before it can be built.

Can I mix several door models in one container?

Usually yes, and it is often the fastest way to test a supplier. The packing plan has to be agreed in advance so the loading does not damage the faces.

Which single document protects the order most?

A written specification plus a sealed approved sample: together they define what "as ordered" means.

Summary

Qualify the factory on capability, routine testing and export record; ask for the test report rather than the certificate; agree MOQ, tooling and lead times in writing; and never skip the sample.
